Human skin has 5 layers. New skin cells are produced at the innermost layer, known as the basal layer (stratum germinativum). Once produced, the new skin cells continue moving upwards through the skin layers, matures & dies. By the time they reach the outermost layer, the stratum corneum (horny layer) they are all dead. Scrubbing helps in removing these dead cells & thus invigorates the process of new cell production.
